Cooperative Research with the National Institute
for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology, Spain
In 2001, A memorandum of agreement was signed between the Regents of the University of California and the National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology (INIA) of Spain. This established a formal framework for scientific cooperation in projects on research and development.

At the present time there are 2 projects underway:

1) Targeted modification of the cattle genome as a part of the study on the role of Prions in "mad cow disease." Specific objective: To determine the feasibility of changing PrP in cattle using homologous recombination to generate cattle resistant to bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

Cooperating departments: Department of Animal Science, College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, University of California, Davis  and the Departamento de Reproducción Animal y Conservación de Recursos Zoogenéticos, INIA, Madrid, Spain.

2) Models on Sustainable Management and Ecology of Mediterranean Oak Woodlands:  Specific Objective: Further ecological, economic, and policy-oriented collaborative research on the sustainable management and ecology of Mediterranean oak woodlands.

Cooperating departments: The Centre for Forest Research of INIA and the Center for Forestry at the University of California, Berkeley.  The principal scientists from INIA will be from the Centro de Investigación Forestal (CIFOR). In addition, resource economists and social scientists from Instituto de Economía y Geografía, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (IEG CSIC) will be involved. From the University of California, there will be scientists associated with Integrated Hardwood Range Management Program (IHRMP), as well as the UC Berkeley College of Natural Resources and UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Science.  The project is jointly managed by Mr. Gregorio Montero (INIA)  and Mr. Rick Standiford.
